It isn’t easy looking for a new job, and it’s especially hard to find one that will be a good fit for you and the employer. So where to start? Here are some important tips to help with the search for the best new job!
1. Define your dream role
What are you looking for in your dream job? Start by writing down all of the job titles you are looking for. Then, outline some bullet points for specific tasks and goals you will want to accomplish at the new job. Finally, work through the logistics, including your desired salary range (do your research on typical salaries for the roles you are seeking), cities and locations you want to work at, and companies you want to work for (as well as companies you absolutely DO NOT want to work for).

2. Outline your skills and strengths
Why should they hire you? Take some time to think through what you can offer an employer. Make a list of your strengths as a worker (i.e. work well under pressure, always meets deadlines, bilingual, expert in Microsoft Office programs) and as an employee (i.e. team player, cooperates well with others, punctual and organized).
Not sure of what employers are looking for? Browse some job listings to get a better understanding to best position yourself.
3. Fix your résumé!
Employers look for keywords, key skills, and accomplishments. Make sure you highlight and include as many “buzz words” as possible that relate to the skills and strengths you already outlined. Then, make sure your resume boasts about impressive accomplishments from previous roles and from other professional experiences you have. IMPRESS THEM! Include numbers to back your claims, and be ready to show how you arrived at those numbers.
Want a second opinion on how that resume looks? Find career counselors who can give you feedback as soon as possible!
4. Prepare for interviews
Do your research! Once you have landed an interview, make sure to wow the hiring managers and prove your worth. Research the company, research the role, and be prepared to share your insights from past experiences! For example, make sure you find out about the latest positive news and achievements of the company so that you can bring them up in the conversation.
Nervous about interviewing? Find local career counselors who will guide and prepare you today!
5. Follow up
Want to really wow them? After the interview send a follow up email thanking them for their time and consideration. After all, interviewing can be time consuming for all parties involved so it’s important to show you appreciate their time, consideration, and that you show continued interest in the role after the interview.
